Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley

Description

Gurez Valley, often called the "Crown of Kashmir," is an offbeat high-altitude Himalayan valley located in the Bandipora district, approximately 123 km from Srinagar. Situated at an elevation of about 2,580 metres (8,460 ft), it is one of the most remote and pristine destinations in India, having only recently opened to regular tourism due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC).

  • Habba Khatoon Peak: A majestic, pyramid-shaped mountain that dominates the landscape of Dawar. It is named after the famous 16th-century Kashmiri poetess.
  • Kishanganga River: A sparkling blue river that flows through the heart of the valley, offering opportunities for trout fishing and rafting.
  • Unique Culture: The inhabitants are ethnic Dards (Shins) who speak Shina, a language distinct from Kashmiri. Their traditional log-wood architecture gives the valley a unique European countryside feel.
  • Razdan Pass: The gateway to Gurez, situated at 11,672 feet. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and is often compared to Rohtang Pass for its dramatic scenery.
  • Tulail Valley
