Description

Pahalgam is a hill station in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Mountain trails run northeast to Amarnath Cave Temple, a Hindu shrine and site of the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Overa Aru Wildlife Sanctuary is home to animals including brown bears and musk deer. Northeast, the Lidder River runs through scenic Betaab Valley. Southeast, Tulian Lake is flanked by mountain peaks and often frozen.

Visa Requirements

Best Time to Visit
  • Spring/Summer (April to June): Ideal for sightseeing, trekking, and pleasant weather (10°C to 23°C). The valley is in full bloom.
  • Monsoon (July to September): Lush green, but occasional heavy rain. This is also the peak of the Amarnath Yatra, causing higher crowds.
  • Autumn (October to November): Golden-hued landscapes, clear skies, and a quieter, colder experience (5°C to 20°C).
  • Winter (December to March): Ideal for snow sports (skiing, sledging) and experiencing heavy snowfall (temperatures drop to -6°C)
Health & Safety
  • Security: Pahalgam is highly secure, with a strong security presence and a dedicated Tourist Police force.
  • Travel Precautions: Stick to popular tourist areas, travel during daylight hours on highways, and book with registered travel agents or approved J&K Tourism vehicles.
  • Health: Carry medications for altitude sickness and cold/flu. Drink only bottled or boiled water.
  • Clothing: Carry light woollens for summer and heavy woollens, jackets, and water-repellent gear for winters/monsoons.
